Goldwater Campaigns During 1964 Presidential Election

Republicans Risk Repeat of 1964

Birth of the Conservative Movement

The nomination of Barry Goldwater as the standard bearer for the Republican Party in the 1964 Presidential Election marked the beginning of the Conservative Movement in America.  For the first time, conservatives rallied around a candidate with a fervor not seen before nor since, for that matter, at least not until the modern Tea Party movement took shape in the wake of the failed Obama presidency.  Forty-eight years ago, Republicans chose Goldwater over other outstanding candidates, like Nelson Rockefeller, William Scranton and George Romney, all governors of key states who might have had broader appeal, but were not as conservative.  Going against all odds with Goldwater in a political climate that favored liberals, the Republicans ultimately went down to a crushing defeat, winning only 6 states and 38.5% of the vote.  Many believe that it was worth the effort back in 1964 just to have an opportunity to flex the political muscles and demonstrate the burgeoning might of conservatives, laying the groundwork for the future victories of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.  The question now comes down to whether we can afford risking another such defeat in the 2012 Presidential Election, an election that many believe will be ‘do or die’ for the American Way.

Gingrich Surge Changes Everything

We love Newt Gingrich and would be very happy to have him as our president.  Gingrich would be an outstanding leader and we will work hard to elect him if he is the nominee.  But does he have broad enough appeal to garner the votes needed to beat Barack Obama?  Are Americans just looking for an intelligent, skilled debater in their president?  Isn’t that what we have now.  While these are tremendously important attributes, Gingrich’s strong conservative views along with his well documented past history, some of which may be over the baggage allowance, could be a turn off for many voters who might otherwise support a Republican candidate.  On the other hand, those conservative creds were apparently just what the people in South Carolina were looking for.  One thing’s for sure…in this rapidly changing primary campaign, more fluid than any we have seen in recent history, Gingrich has now made it a competitive race.

Romney’s 25% Ceiling of Support

Just a week ago it looked like Mitt Romney had things all sewn up for the Republican Nomination.  But then his ‘win’ in the Iowa Caucuses was unceremoniously snatched away from him followed shortly thereafter by his distant second finish in the South Carolina primary.  His future is anything but certain now.  Most would agree that Romney is experienced, articulate, and conservative enough to satisfy most Tea Party Patriots in the general election.  He also has the looks, charisma and presidential demeanor that many voters seem to want.  Finally, we believe the perception that he is ‘center-right’ would appeal to many independent voters and their support will be critical if the Republicans are to retake the White House.  All that notwithstanding, Mitt Romney simply has not been able to break through that 25% ceiling of steady support that he has maintained over the last six years.

But 2012 is Not 1964

The big difference between now and 48 years ago is a little thing called ‘fair and balanced news’.  Back then there were only three major television networks and they were all in the tank for the Democrats.  The ‘beloved’ Walter Cronkite, anchor of the CBS Evening News, for example, was a close personal friend of the Kennedys and a known left wing liberal.  Jumping back to 2012, the cable news networks now offer an attractive alternative and are actually more popular than the ‘mainstream media’ news broadcasts, which many believe have lost their relevancy.  An additional change in the political climate that favors conservatives this time around is reflected in a 2009 Gallup Poll which showed that nearly twice as many Americans identified themselves as conservative (40%) as opposed to liberal (21%), with a significant 35% identifying as moderate.  It goes without saying that the zeal with which many of those conservatives are approaching the 2012 Presidential Elections cannot be underestimated.  Think Tea Party Patriots!  Republicans will now have to decide whether to go for broke with Newt and galvanize the conservatives or play it safe with Mitt and attract those moderates.  Couldn’t we just have both of them!

America at the Crossroads

A Most Important Election!

In this election year of 2012 the citizens of the United States of America will make one of the most important decisions of their lives when they cast their vote for President of the United States.  The results of this presidential election will have far reaching implications for our country and significant ramifications (see WOW) that will affect the personal lives of each and every one of us.  In 2008 our country took a sharp turn to the left and many who voted for Barack Obama now realize that they made a terrible mistake.  After a three year dalliance with Obama’s left wing liberal policies most Americans are now worse off than they were before his administration took control.  For those of us who took the time to understand the issues and study the candidates, all the information that would portend this disaster was there in 2008.  Unfortunately, we have all had to suffer because so many individuals were duped by the charm, charisma and slick tongue of a community organizer with no leadership experience.  While many would say they should have known better, we applaud them for admitting their folly and for rejoining us in defending America.  Together we can restore the values we cherish and the principles on which our great country was founded.

Let’s Take America Back

This year more than at any time in recent history the presidential election will determine the future of our country.  Will we return to the tried and true ways that have made us the exceptional country that we have been or will we continue down the road to socialism and mediocrity?  With so much riding on the results of this election it will be the responsibility of every citizen to become familiar with the issues and to know where the candidates stand.  If enough Americans make the effort to do that, Barack Obama is sure to be a one term president.  Over the next ten months we at What Makes US Great will endeavor to help bring the facts to our readers so that each of us can make the logical choice when we exercise our right to choose the next leader of our country on November 6, 2012.  Be sure to return for our next posting where you will see how we believe the Republican Presidential Nomination is shaping up and, God willing, will provide us with the next President of the United States.

Surprise! Surprise! Daniel Ellsberg Joins Occupy Wall Street

Still Down On America

It should come as no surprise that Daniel Ellsberg of Pentagon Papers infamy has been seen with the campers at the UC Berkeley OWS protests.  He now joins ‘Nixon hater’ John Dean and the big union bosses in supporting this group of socialists, druggies and other assorted losers.  A Harvard graduate (also no surprise), Ellsberg leaked top secret military information to the press in 1969 at a time when brave men and women were in harm’s way serving their country in Vietnam.  He was later tried for espionage.

Old Wasted Socialists

By descending into the bowels of the OWS movement Ellsberg has once again leaked secret information…information that the puppeteers behind the occupiers don’t want us to know.  That secret is that OWS really stands for Old Wasted Socialists, not Occupy Wall Street!  Anyone who has visited the protesters, as we did during the first weeks of the movement, has known this all along.  Thanks to the growing number of aging, left wing has-beens who have joined their ranks, the world now knows.  We also know that these unfortunate individuals are actually the 1% rather then the 99% they claim to be!  Gosh, I bet Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are sorry they threw their hats in with these folks!

Airmen Stand Up to Bullies

There can be no question that the United States of America is under attack on multiple fronts from within.  Whether it’s the socialists trying to ruin our economy, the homosexual recruiters infiltrating our public schools or the so-called immigration ‘advocates’ trying to overrun our country with drug dealers, each one is waging a war on America and everything that we stand for.  And each of these enemies from within have a common ally defending them…liberal lawyers.  Over the last several decades this war on America has opened on a new front…the War on Christmas, led by a small group of atheists, some multiculturalist-diversity groupies and the pc crowd.  Good heavens, even Santa Claus and the venerable Christmas tree have become targets of their hateful invective (see WOW).

‘War on Christmas’ Deniers

For those who deny that there is a War on Christmas, take note.  A single atheist at Travis Air Force Base out in Fairfield, California was apparently offended by the annual display of holiday greetings at the entrance to the base, a display that has helped bring the holiday spirit to thousands of military heroes and their families each Christmas over the past 17 years.  The display consists of signs offering holiday greetings from the various squadrons represented on the base, as well as a Nativity Scene and Menorah.  The lone atheist reported to ‘The American Atheists’ that he was offended by this cheerful display, whereupon this dissident organization representing a miniscule segment of American society immediately threatened legal action against the Air Force.  Threatening to sue is, of course, their modus operandi.  To his credit, the Commanding Officer of the Air Force Base refused to remove the Christmas display.  Instead, the publicity seeking atheist was diplomatically allowed to put up a sign along with the other holiday displays.

Atheist’s Display Acknowledges Christmas Holiday

Ironically, the sign put up by the atheist at Travis AFB acknowledges the Christmas holiday season simply by its placement alongside the other holiday greetings and by using the words ‘Holiday Season’.  We salute the Air Force and the Commanding Officer of Travis Air Force Base for standing up to the bullies who are waging war on Christmas.  The great majority of folks who live or work at Travis Air Force Base or who visit there for medical care enjoy the display every year.  And most would be honored to have someone greet them with a ‘Happy Hanukkah’, or ‘Happy Chinese New Year’, or a ‘Ramadan Kareem’…as well as ‘Merry Christmas’!  One has to seriously question the stability of someone who would be offended by Christmas.  Come on!  There is nothing offensive about Christmas…the most inclusive, welcoming, up-beat holiday around!  For heaven’s sake, Christmas displays are popular even in Japan and atheist China now!  You would have to be a real Scrooge or perhaps a liberal with a political agenda to eschew Peace, Joy and Good Will.  Or maybe some people just enjoy wallowing in victimhood.  Bah, Humbug!

Christmas is an American Tradition that is Here to Stay!

Let this be a clarion call for those of us who cherish our nation and the Christian values upon which it was founded.  We simply are not going to allow a few disgruntled individuals or a bunch of liberal lawyers or a small contingent of ‘America bashers’ to diminish a sacred Christian holiday that has not only become a beloved American tradition, but is part of the legal fabric of our country.  After being approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate, Christmas was officially declared a federal holiday by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1870.  Since then (and long before) millions of Americans have enjoyed the Christmas holidays as a time to celebrate the Savior’s birth with family and friends.  A Gallup poll suggests that 95% of Americans today celebrate Christmas.  We will be watching very carefully next year, expecting the Nativity Scene to be on display once again at the entrance to Travis Air Force Base.  In the meantime, you can do your part by joining me in wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!
