The College Scam

Is Your College A Liberal Madrasa?

The United States of the 21st Century is fortunate to have some of the best colleges and universities in the history of the world.  Year after year, these institutions graduate first rate scholars in every field of study who then move on to successful careers, making contributions that benefit all of us.  Unfortunately, there are also some institutions of higher learning that scam their students into paying up to $40,000 a year in tuition to attend what amounts to a liberal indoctrination camp.  It is understandable that these students would be discouraged (make that outraged) when they emerge from these madrasa-like enclaves without having improved upon their high school reading and writing skills, without learning history and science and without learning how to be creative and think for themselves.  Oh, but they’re experts in such subjects as Diversity and Social Justice, Marxist Concepts of Racism and Queer Musicology, all actual courses at major universities!  The moment of truth comes when these hapless students discover that the diploma they received isn’t worth the paper it was printed on and that, after all the money they invested, they can’t find a job.

Pay Back Your Debt

We sympathize with the graduates of these colleges and universities, many of whom are now camping out on Wall Street and in other cities throughout the country demanding that their student loan debts be forgiven.  Make no mistake, we firmly believe that an education loan obligation, like any loan that an individual has legally agreed to pay back, must be met without government assistance.  Nonetheless, it is entirely appropriate for these students to return to the ivy covered halls of their alma mater and demand a refund.  Considering the outrageous fees levied by some of these universities, those which have not lived up to their obligation and delivered what they promised should return a portion of the tuition to these students.  Rather than blame everyone else for this debacle, we encourage all students who are now protesting their student loans due to these scams to hold their college or university accountable and seek recompense.

A Privilege Not a Right

There was a time when going to college was a privilege for those who worked hard in high school, had the intelligence and drive to get through the rigors of higher education and had a requirement to get special training for a specific vocation.  Now, it seems, college is a right due everyone whether or not they have earned it.  In 1959 approximately 45% of high school graduates enrolled in college.  By 2009 that number had jumped to 70%.  Of course, the colleges and universities capitalized on all of this by dumbing down the entrance requirements and pumping up the tuition fees.  To cite statistics for just one year, costs were up 8.3% in the Fall of 2011, when the rest of the country was in an economic freefall, without any corresponding increase in benefits for the students.  Obviously, all of this cheapens the value of a college degree for everyone and now college graduates almost have to get an advanced degree to be competitive in the job market.

Not Everyone Needs to Go to College

Many high school students would do better in the long run if they entered the work force directly after graduation, especially if they have shown no aptitude for studying while in school.  In fact, faced with this prospect, they may be more inclined to apply themselves and take advantage of the free education they are provided in high school.  Vocational school would be a much better fit for someone planning to enter the skilled labor force and for many others the two year curriculum at a community college is all that is needed to prepare them for the work force without busting the budget.  Parents should think twice before incurring significant debt for themselves and their children just to send them off to college for four, five or six years of partying, pontificating and procrastinating.  It may not be worth it when all you get for your trouble is a child who eventually moves back home as a brain washed, liberal automaton who has forsaken all your values!

Drugs Will Kill You!

Joining a Long List of Dead Drug Abusers

If it turns out that Whitney Houston died as a result of her drug abuse problem, she will join a long list of talented celebrities who threw their lives away playing this deadly game.  What a tragic ending for someone with such an incredible voice and who brought enjoyment to so many people throughout the world.  For many, it takes just one instance of trying drugs to get hopelessly ‘hooked’…a good reason to never try them in the first place.  Yet there are some individuals in our country who still want to legalize drugs.  These proponents of the philosophy ‘if it feels good, do it’ have perpetrated a hoax on an unwary citizenry by starting with so called ‘medical’ marijuana.  What a joke!  Marijuana does nothing that already available medicines can’t do!

A Heavy Price to Pay

The foolish proponents of legalizing drugs, like Ron Paul, Tony Bennett and Jerry Brown, ignore the heavy price abusers pay in health related problems such as HIV, chronic hepatitis C and fatal heart events induced by drugs.  And how about the effects of drug abuse on developing young minds or the many patients in burn wards because of burns sustained from trying to make methamphetamine?  It has been estimated that up to one third of patients in burn wards in major US hospitals in the South, Midwest and West are there for that reason, at a cost of $6,000 per day!  And what about all the accidents and shooting deaths directly attributable to drug abuse!  For all these reasons and many more, we must stand firm and never legalize these life destroying drugs.

Dead Celebrities Who Reportedly Used Drugs

The following partial list of celebrities who used drugs and died at an early age is but a microcosm (see WOW) of the tragically large number of young people in our country who receive an early visit from the grim reaper.  Remember, you get only one chance at life.  And you’re a long time dead!

The Susan G. Komen Revelation

Who Knew?

Who would have thought that a respected charity like the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization with the worthy goal of finding a cure for breast cancer and supporting its victims, was all along contributing money to fund abortions?  Many of you who have contributed to Komen for the Cure must be feeling betrayed right now, wondering how they could possible reconcile supporting these two diametrically opposed causes, one preventing death and the other causing death.  How could breast cancer and abortion possibly be related?  At first we applauded the Komen Foundation’s courageous act in separating itself from the liberal Planned Parenthood organization which promotes late term abortion.  Parental discretion is advised for the following description, but late term abortion is where a fully formed, perfect, living baby is killed inside the womb by decapitation.  In a disappointing reversal under pressure from the Pro-Choice ‘to kill babies’ extremists in the country, Komen caved and reinstated its relationship with Planned Parenthood.

Alternatives to Komen

I’m sure that Ms. Komen who died of breast cancer at the age of 36 in 1980 would turn over in her grave if she knew her name was now associated with abortion.  Until the Komen Foundation divorces itself from the business of baby killing, many are urging that we send our contributions to other organizations that strictly fund breast cancer related projects.  One worthy alternative would be the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  There are also many universities and hospitals which do breast cancer research and I am sure they would be happy to receive direct contributions, as well.  A perusal of the full grant disclosure issued by the Avon Foundation for Women confirms that they made no contributions to Planned Parenthood in 2009 or 2010.  I was unable to find a full grant disclosure for the National Breast Cancer Foundation on the internet and would be interested to hear from anyone who might have information about this organization as another possible alternative.  At least we have learned a lesson from this unfortunate incident.  Even the most virtuous sounding charities must be carefully vetted before we send them our hard earned dollars.

Slovenia Confirms Conservative Government

Yet Another Conservative EU Nation

Joining a growing list of European nations, the parliament of Slovenia has confirmed conservative Janez Jansa as prime minister.  Jansa’s five party coalition holds 50 of 90 seats in parliament, putting the center right majority in the country on solid footing.  Echoing familiar calls throughout the world, Jansa’s Slovenian Democratic Party has promised to cut taxes, raise the retirement age, reduce government regulations, balance the budget and reduce the deficit.  One of their first challenges will be to ease the credit crunch and restore the country’s credit rating.  Slovenia now joins a number of other nations in Europe with conservative governments, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Sweden.
