Manger Scene Set Back

Last Christmas we promised to follow up on the battle between the US Air Force at Travis AFB in California and the atheists.  For many years visitors and residents of the base enjoyed the festive sight of a manger scene and a Hanukkah menorah (hanukkiyah) at the main intersection near the entrance to the base.  After a complaint from several attention seeking atheists last Christmas, Air Force brass invited them to display their own sign along with the other holiday greetings.  Last year the Nativity scene and menorah were still at the center of the holiday display right up front next to the sidewalk near the intersection.  But this year, for the first time, both the Nativity scene and the menorah were relegated to a position far removed from the curb, almost out of sight, lest they offend one of the atheists.

War on Christmas

This is a disturbing trend in the War on Christmas which is part of the overall campaign by secular progressives to undermine Christianity.  Earlier this month the Washington Post (gleefully) reported that ‘Unbelief’ is now the third largest religion in the world.  A study released December 18, 2012 by The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that 84% of the world’s population believes in some form of religion.  Of those individuals, Christians formed the largest group at 32% of the world’s population, followed by Muslims with 23 %.  But the third largest group out of the 7 billion people in the world included those with no religious belief, coming in at 16% or 1.1 billion people.  That’s still looks like a small minority to me, so why are we allowing them to impose their will on the rest of us!

Declining Military Moral Values 

Anyone want to bet that next year the manger and menorah will be gone altogether at Travis AFB?  I would not be surprised to see the symbols of our Judeo-Christian heritage slowly eased out of the picture at the air force base.  It all fits with the overall decline in moral values that has predictably taken place in the military since Barack Obama lowered the moral standards for military personnel!  It should have been no surprise, with sodomy now being actively promoted in the barracks, when the top echelons of the military were rocked by a sex scandal…think Generals Petraeus and Allen!  To close on a positive note, however, I heard lots of folks greeting each other with ‘Merry Christmas’ this year, including clerks at most of the stores I visited.  Even the atheists’ sign at Travis AFB included a Christmas greeting.  The War on Christmas ain’t over yet!

Airmen Stand Up to Bullies

          There can be no question that the United States of America is under attack on multiple fronts from within.  Whether it’s the socialists trying to ruin our economy, the homosexual recruiters infiltrating our public schools or the so-called immigration ‘advocates’ trying to overrun our country with drug dealers, each one is waging a war on America and everything that we stand for.  And each of these enemies from within have a common ally defending them…liberal lawyers.  Over the last several decades this war on America has opened on a new front…the War on Christmas, led by a small group of atheists, some multiculturalist-diversity groupies and the pc crowd.  Good heavens, even Santa Claus and the venerable Christmas tree have become targets of their hateful invective (see WOW).

‘War on Christmas’ Deniers

          For those who deny that there is a War on Christmas, take note.  A single atheist at Travis Air Force Base out in Fairfield, California was apparently offended by the annual display of holiday greetings at the entrance to the base, a display that has helped bring the holiday spirit to thousands of military heroes and their families each Christmas over the past 17 years.  The display consists of signs offering holiday greetings from the various squadrons represented on the base, as well as a Nativity Scene and Menorah.  The lone atheist reported to ‘The American Atheists’ that he was offended by this cheerful display, whereupon this dissident organization representing a miniscule segment of American society immediately threatened legal action against the Air Force.  Threatening to sue is, of course, their modus operandi.  To his credit, the Commanding Officer of the Air Force Base refused to remove the Christmas display.  Instead, the publicity seeking atheist was diplomatically allowed to put up a sign along with the other holiday displays.

          Ironically, the sign put up by the atheist at Travis AFB acknowledges the Christmas holiday season simply by its placement alongside the other holiday greetings and by using the words ‘Holiday Season’.  We salute the Air Force and the Commanding Officer of Travis Air Force Base for standing up to the bullies who are waging war on Christmas.  The great majority of folks who live or work at Travis Air Force Base or who visit there for medical care enjoy the display every year.  And most would be honored to have someone greet them with a ‘Happy Hanukkah’, or ‘Happy Chinese New Year’, or a ‘Ramadan Kareem’…as well as ‘Merry Christmas’!  One has to seriously question the stability of someone who would be offended by Christmas.  Come on!  There is nothing offensive about Christmas…the most inclusive, welcoming, up-beat holiday around!  For heaven’s sake, Christmas displays are popular even in Japan and atheist China now!  You would have to be a real Scrooge or perhaps a liberal with a political agenda to eschew Peace, Joy and Good Will.  Or maybe some people just enjoy wallowing in victimhood.  Bah, Humbug!

Christmas is an American Tradition that is Here to Stay! 

          Let this be a clarion call for those of us who cherish our nation and the Christian values upon which it was founded.  We simply are not going to allow a few disgruntled individuals or a bunch of liberal lawyers or a small contingent of ‘America bashers’ to diminish a sacred Christian holiday that has not only become a beloved American tradition, but is part of the legal fabric of our country.  After being approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate, Christmas was officially declared a federal holiday by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1870.  Since then (and long before) millions of Americans have enjoyed the Christmas holidays as a time to celebrate the Savior’s birth with family and friends.  A Gallup poll suggests that 95% of Americans today celebrate Christmas.  We will be watching very carefully next year, expecting the Nativity Scene to be on display once again at the entrance to Travis Air Force Base.  In the meantime, you can do your part by joining me in wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!

Atheists Insult Americans

THE CHURCH OF ATHEISM 

          David Silverman bills himself as the President of American Atheists, but he knows it’s just a scam.  He is really Pastor of the Church of Atheists, because in reality the American Atheists represent the very thing by which they claim to be offended…religion!  Webster’s Dictionary defines religion as ‘a cause, principle or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith’.  It would certainly seem that the organization to which Mr. Silverman and his followers belong satisfies this definition.  After all, they have shown that they hold to their beliefs with ardor by purchasing expensive billboard space in several prominent locations throughout the country in order to display their message insulting the great majority of Americans who believe in God…calling their beliefs a scam.  If that isn’t enough, Mr. Silverman called the American people ‘stupid’ last night on the Bill O’Reilly Show.  As a Christian, however, I felt sad for Mr. Silverman when I heard him describe his idea of God as ‘an invisible man up in the sky’, or something to that effect.    

          I am reminded of a recent incident that occurred while I was attending a luncheon for a totally unrelated matter.  I had enjoyed my conversation with a very nice lady sitting next to me and towards the end of the luncheon she excused herself early, announcing to the table at large that she had to attend a meeting of the local atheist’s organization.  I thought to myself, if atheism is a lack of belief in God, then what do they have to meet about?  Then it dawned on me.  Atheism is, itself, a religion, with adherents, leaders and a shared set of beliefs.  And now, the proselytizing of Mr. Silverman and his small band of zealots has confirmed what I came to realize that day.  It is interesting to note that the insults promulgated by Mr. Silverman and his cult of American Atheists were dished out evenly to Christians, Jews and Muslims alike.  Some of the recipients of their hateful words are not likely to take it sitting down, if you know what I mean.
